Strength sees the opponent’s size; intelligence sees the opponent’s weakness and the opportunity within the situation.

English
The story: A forest ruled by fear
In a forest lived a lion of immense physical strength. He killed animals indiscriminately, not merely to satisfy his hunger. His power became a source of fear rather than protection. Every creature lived in constant anxiety, never knowing whose life would be taken next.
At last, the animals approached the lion together and pleaded: “Please do not hunt and kill many of us every day. One animal will come to you voluntarily each day.” The lion accepted, but threatened to kill them all if his meal failed to arrive even once. Random slaughter decreased, yet the forest remained trapped in an unjust agreement made under fear.
One day, it was a rabbit’s turn. He did not despair because of his small body, but he clearly understood that direct combat with the lion was impossible. Instead of asking, “How strong am I?” he asked, “How does the lion use his strength, and which emotion governs his decisions?” His aim was not merely to save himself; he wanted to end the system that demanded a life every day.
The rabbit deliberately reached the lion late. Hungry and furious, the lion became even angrier when he saw such a small meal. The rabbit bowed and explained: “Your Majesty, six rabbits began the journey. Another lion stopped us on the way, claimed that this forest belonged to him, ate the other five, and challenged you to decide who the true king is.”
The mention of “another lion” immediately provoked the lion’s pride. He did not investigate whether the report was true. Believing that his authority had been challenged, he ordered the rabbit to show him the rival. The rabbit led him to a deep well and said that the other lion was hiding inside his fortress.
The lion looked into the well and saw his own reflection in the water. He roared, and the echo returned even louder. Anger and pride shut down his ability to examine what he saw and heard. Mistaking his reflection for a rival, he leapt into the well to attack it and died. The rabbit returned to the forest with the news that the animals were free.
Why did the rabbit succeed?
- He honestly accepted the power gap: direct combat would not be bravery; it would be futile self-destruction.
- He read the opponent’s psychology: he recognised that pride and rivalry were stronger drivers for the lion than hunger alone.
- He turned timing into strategy: the delay made the lion impatient and ready for an impulsive decision.
- He used the environment as a tool: although he had no weapon, he used the well, reflection, and echo.
- He linked personal danger to a collective goal: he did not merely escape; he ended the forest’s daily sacrifice.
What was the lion’s real weakness?
The well alone did not defeat the lion. He was defeated by pride, anger, haste, and the habit of treating expectation as fact. Once he believed that a rival existed, he interpreted the image as an enemy and the echo as a challenge. Modern psychology calls this tendency to fit evidence to what we already expect or want to believe confirmation bias.
The story does not claim that everyone with power must be wrong. It warns that power becomes dangerous when it believes questions are unnecessary and cannot regulate emotion. Had the lion paused to ask, “Why does the figure move exactly when I move? Why does the sound return?” his own strength would not have destroyed him.
Is intelligence merely deception?
The rabbit uses a false story, so it would be dangerous to conclude that any deception is acceptable when the goal seems good. In ordinary family, educational, and workplace relationships, lying destroys trust. Here, however, a weaker creature facing unavoidable mortal danger uses defensive misdirection to stop continuing violence when no safe path of escape is available.
Before calling a strategy ethical, four questions matter: Is the threat real and immediate? Is there a safe, honest alternative? Is the response proportionate to the danger? Does it protect others, or merely serve private gain? Cleverness may achieve a result; ethical intelligence also searches for the right method and the right limit.
A strategic lesson for modern life
A student may have limited facilities; a small business may lack capital; an employee may have little positional authority; a family may have few resources for confronting a difficult problem. In an unequal situation, imitating the larger player is not always the answer. Strategy begins by identifying the small but distinctive resource we possess and applying it at the right time in the right way.
- Pause first: do not react immediately from fear or anger.
- Define the problem: is the visible person the whole problem, or is a system sustaining it?
- Inventory your resources: what information, time, skill, relationships, or lawful support do you have?
- Understand motivation: is the other side driven by fear, status, profit, pride, or pressure?
- Choose a small, safe step: begin with an action that is lawful, testable, and open to revision.
The lion and the rabbit within us
Both characters appear within human behaviour. The lion in us emerges when position, knowledge, or past success makes us overconfident and reactive. The rabbit in us awakens when we accept limits, regulate emotion, observe the situation, and design a method. Human development does not mean abandoning strength; it means cultivating intelligence that gives strength a direction.
Connections within this series
The jackal and the war-drum teaches us to investigate before surrendering to fear; the lion suffers because he does not. The crows and the black snake shows how circumstances can become strategy when force is insufficient. The heron and the crab warns how selfish deception operates; the rabbit’s story invites reflection on defensive strategy and its ethical limits.
Today’s practice
Choose one problem that makes you think, “I do not have enough power or resources.” Write five lines: my real goal; my main constraint; my small advantage; the likely response of the person or system; the lawful and safe step I can take today. If you feel driven to make an emotional decision, postpone it for at least thirty minutes and read this list again.
My view
Not every problem in life can be solved by greater force, money, or status. Sometimes we may be smaller than the problem, but our thinking can be larger than it. Calmness creates room for intelligence, observation reveals opportunity, and ethics gives that opportunity direction. Real victory lies not in hiding weakness, but in understanding it and transforming it into the right strategy.
Which problem in your life now needs intelligence rather than force?
