సిద్ధాశ్రమ యజ్ఞరక్షణ: మారీచ–సుబాహులపై నా తొలి కర్తవ్య పరీక్ష
నేను రాముణ్ని.
తాటక వనం దాటి మేము సిద్ధాశ్రమానికి చేరుకున్నాము. విశ్వామిత్ర మహర్షి అక్కడ యజ్ఞదీక్ష స్వీకరించారు. యజ్ఞం ఆరు రాత్రులు పూర్తయ్యే వరకు మౌనంగా ఉండాల్సి వస్తుందని ఆశ్రమంలోని ఋషులు మాకు చెప్పారు. దాన్ని భంగం చేయడానికి వచ్చే శక్తుల నుంచి రక్షించడం నా, లక్ష్మణుని బాధ్యత అయ్యింది.
మేము అలసత్వానికి చోటివ్వలేదు. రాత్రింబవళ్లు జాగరూకంగా ఉన్నాము. మొదటి రోజుల్లో ఎలాంటి దాడి జరగకపోయినా, “ఇక ప్రమాదం లేదు” అని అనుకోలేదు. గురువు అప్పగించిన కార్యం పూర్తి అయ్యే వరకు కర్తవ్యం ముగియదని తెలుసుకున్నాను.
ఆరవ రోజు యజ్ఞవేదికపై అగ్ని ప్రకాశించింది. ఆకాశంలో భయంకరమైన శబ్దం వినిపించింది. మారీచుడు, సుబాహుడు తమ అనుచరులతో వచ్చి యజ్ఞాన్ని అపవిత్రం చేయడానికి మాయతో మేఘాలను కమ్మించారు.
వారిని చూసి లక్ష్మణునితో మాట్లాడాను. మారీచుడిని సంహరించకుండా దూరంగా తరిమివేయాలని నిర్ణయించాను. మానవాస్త్రాన్ని ప్రయోగించగా అతడు సముద్రం వైపు దూరంగా విసరబడ్డాడు. సుబాహుడు దాడిని కొనసాగించాడు; అతనిపై అగ్నేయాస్త్రాన్ని ప్రయోగించాను. లక్ష్మణుడు మిగిలిన దాడిదారులను తరిమివేశాడు.
యజ్ఞం అంతరాయం లేకుండా పూర్తయింది. విశ్వామిత్రుడు సంతోషించి, గురువాక్యాన్ని కార్యరూపం దాల్చావని అన్నాడు. నా తొలి బాధ్యత పరీక్షలో బలం మాత్రమే కాదు—ఆరు రోజుల అప్రమత్తత, సరైన threatకు సరైన response, అన్నతో coordination కూడా అవసరమయ్యాయి.

Protection అంటే crisis వచ్చినప్పుడు మాత్రమే స్పందించడం కాదు; crisis రాకముందు disciplined readinessను నిలబెట్టడం. Cybersecurity team alertలేని రోజుల్లో కూడా systemsను monitor చేయాలి. Doctor emergency వచ్చేవరకు protocolను వదిలేయలేడు. Project team చివరి deadline రోజున కాకుండా మొత్తం execution windowలో qualityని కాపాడాలి.
Response proportionality కూడా ముఖ్యం. ప్రతి సమస్యకు ఒకే తీవ్రతతో స్పందించకూడదు. కొన్నిటిని contain చేయాలి, కొన్నిటిని remove చేయాలి, కొన్నిటికి team coordination కావాలి. లక్ష్యం anger తీర్చుకోవడం కాదు—missionను రక్షించడం.

కర్తవ్యం యొక్క అసలు పరీక్ష ప్రమాద క్షణంలోనే కాదు; ప్రమాదం రాకముందు కొనసాగించే అప్రమత్తతలో ఉంటుంది. సరైన సమస్యకు సరైన తీవ్రతతో స్పందించడం పరిపక్వ నాయకత్వం.

Defending the Sacrifice at Siddhashrama: My First Test of Sustained Duty
I am Rama.
After passing through Tataka's forest, we reached Siddhashrama. Sage Vishwamitra entered the discipline of the sacrifice. The sages told Lakshmana and me that he would remain silent while the rite continued for six nights. Protecting it from disruption became our responsibility.
We stayed alert day and night. The absence of an attack during the early days did not mean that danger had ended. A task entrusted by the teacher was not complete until the rite itself was complete.
On the sixth day, a dreadful sound rose in the sky. Maricha and Subahu arrived with followers and used illusion to threaten the altar. I chose to drive Maricha away rather than kill him. The Manava missile hurled him far toward the sea. Subahu continued the assault, and I struck him with the Agneya missile. Lakshmana helped rout the remaining attackers.
The sacrifice was completed without interruption. Vishwamitra said that his purpose had been fulfilled. The test required more than force: six days of vigilance, a proportionate response to different threats and coordination with my brother.

This narration follows Valmiki Ramayana, Bala Kanda, Sarga 30. Maricha is not killed here; he is driven far away. Subahu is slain. Details from later popular retellings have not been inserted into the episode.
🌱 Human Development Perspective
Protection is not only a reaction at the moment of crisis. It is sustained readiness beforehand. Cybersecurity teams monitor even on quiet days; doctors maintain protocols before emergencies; project teams protect quality throughout execution, not only on the deadline. Proportionality also matters: different threats require containment, removal or coordinated action. The aim is to protect the mission, not satisfy anger.
🌱 Life Lesson
The real test of duty is not only the dangerous moment, but the vigilance maintained before it. Mature leadership matches the response to the problem.
