English

Seen alone, a sparrow is tiny and an elephant is immensely powerful. Yet the meaning of strength changes when the right people, different abilities, and clear responsibilities come together around one purpose. The Panchatantra tale of the sparrows and the elephant teaches that unity is not merely having more members; collective power arises when complementary abilities are used in the right sequence.

The story: A great struggle that began with a small nest

A pair of sparrows built their nest on the branch of a tamal tree in a dense forest. In time, there were eggs in the nest. One day, a wild elephant distressed by the heat came to the tree seeking shade. Having lost its good sense in that condition, it pulled and broke the branch that held the nest. The parent birds narrowly escaped, but their eggs were destroyed.

The hen-sparrow lamented in grief. Hearing her distress, her close friend, a woodpecker, came to her. It did not stop after offering words of consolation; it was willing to think about how the injustice might be answered. Yet it recognised that its own ability would not be enough. It sought the help of its friend, a gnat named Lute-Buzz.

The gnat readily agreed to help, but did not rush into action. She proposed consulting her wise frog friend, Cloud-Messenger. Together they explained the entire problem to him. The frog then combined their separate abilities into one coordinated strategy.

First, the gnat would buzz musically in the elephant’s ear. When the elephant closed its eyes in pleasure, the woodpecker would use its sharp bill to destroy its sight. Later, as the thirsty elephant searched for water, the frog would croak beside a deep pit. Mistaking the sound for evidence of water, the elephant would move towards it and fall in. Because each step was carried out in the planned order, the mighty elephant was defeated.

Unity is not a crowd—it is coordinated capability

The four small creatures did not succeed merely because they gathered in one place. Each performed a different function. The sparrow clarified the purpose. The woodpecker contributed precision. The gnat redirected the elephant’s attention. The frog understood the terrain and the likely sequence of events, then shaped the whole strategy.

If everyone had attempted the same task, their combined strength would not have grown. One ability began where another ended. A genuine team does not make all its members alike; it connects their differences to a shared purpose.

Strength does not have only one form

The elephant possessed physical power. The smaller creatures lacked size, but they had information, agility, precision, knowledge of place, and mutual trust. The large are not strong in every respect, and the small are not weak in every respect. The problem determines which form of strength matters.

Position is one kind of power in an institution. Technical knowledge, public relationships, local experience, data analysis, and creative thinking are also forms of power. Leadership that fails to recognise them leaves much of its real capacity unused.

Friendship should not end with consolation

The woodpecker treated the sparrow’s grief as worthy of its own concern. The gnat did not say that the matter belonged only to the birds. The frog had suffered no direct loss, yet contributed his judgment. Those who hear our pain may be acquaintances; those who offer their abilities to reduce it become true companions.

Helping, however, does not mean following every action proposed by a grieving person without thought. A good friend respects emotion, examines facts, considers consequences, and suggests a just and workable path. Empathy becomes power when it is joined by judgment.

A frontal clash is not the only form of courage

Had the sparrow attacked the elephant alone, the result would have been obvious. The smaller creatures did not compete where the elephant was strongest. They studied its behaviour, needs, and vulnerable moments. By connecting attention, thirst, and direction, they created conditions in which their abilities mattered.

Facing a large problem does not always require applying greater force. Breaking it into smaller parts, determining the right sequence, using information, and involving the right person at the right moment may be far more effective. Courage begins action; strategy carries that action towards a result.

Consultation makes a team intelligent

The woodpecker wanted to help but did not pretend to possess a complete plan. It consulted the gnat. The gnat, in turn, recognised the value of the frog’s judgment. At every stage, the ego-driven claim “I know everything” gave way to the more useful question, “Who has the capability this problem needs?”

Seeking advice in a good team is not evidence of incompetence. It is an honest recognition of the scale of the problem. A leader need not appear to hold every answer; the leader must bring people who hold relevant answers to the same table.

The story in modern life

In a student team: One member may research the subject, another analyse data, another build the presentation, and another explain it. If everyone produces slides but no one integrates the argument, the project remains incomplete. Quality rises when responsibilities complement one another.

At work and in institutions: A major problem may contain administrative, technical, financial, and communication dimensions. Departments should regard one another as partners rather than rivals. Walls that prevent information from moving can weaken even a powerful institution.

In a community: Solving a civic problem may require one person to collect evidence, another to write a formal representation, another to reach the responsible authority, and another to monitor progress. Responsible coordination enables a small group to engage effectively with a large system.

In a family: During a crisis, one member may manage finances, another coordinate medical or official information, and another support children or elders. Love matters, but a clear sharing of responsibility also keeps a family steady.

Five risks that weaken unity

  • Ego: Treating one’s own role as important and diminishing the ability of others.
  • Unclear responsibility: Failing to decide who will do what and by when.
  • Broken communication: Allowing a change at one stage to remain unknown to other members.
  • Lack of trust: Losing time because everyone repeatedly doubts another person’s work.
  • Groupthink: Suppressing sound questions and different views in the name of unity.

Unity is not the absence of disagreement. A mature team can disagree safely, choose the strongest idea, and then coordinate after a decision has been made.

Reading the tale through a modern ethical lens

The original fable contains revenge and the death of the elephant. It should not be treated as permission for violence in modern life. Its useful human-development lesson is to meet injustice or abuse of power through evidence, cooperation, lawful procedures, institutional channels, and non-violent strategy—rather than through solitary, impulsive confrontation.

Unity requires an ethical method as well as a common objective. An action does not become good merely because a group performs it together. Truth, justice, reduction of harm, and accountability must guide collective effort.

Connections within this series

If the birds and the ocean shows that the collective resolve of the small can move great power, today’s fable demonstrates how resolve becomes roles, sequence, and strategy. As in the crows and the black snake, the smaller creatures do not compete directly against physical strength. And if the lion and the rabbit teaches that intelligence can outweigh strength, the sparrows-and-elephant story shows that intelligence becomes still more powerful when several minds cooperate.

Five steps towards effective unity

  1. Clarify the common purpose: We are not uniting merely against a person; which problem are we trying to solve?
  2. Identify the needed capabilities: Who holds the knowledge, experience, relationship, technology, or implementation skill?
  3. Define roles and sequence: Who begins, who follows, and when will the decision be reviewed?
  4. Create a communication channel: How will changes, doubts, and risks reach every member?
  5. Set an ethical boundary: Are we remaining within truth and justice instead of using any means merely to obtain a result?

Today’s practice: Map four roles

Choose one problem that feels too large to face alone. On paper, write four roles: the person who defines the problem clearly, the person who supplies a needed skill, the person who connects the right people, and the person who designs the sequence of action. One individual may hold two roles, but identify which role remains empty. Begin one conversation today with someone who could fill that gap.

My view

Unity does not turn the small into the physically large; it prevents small strengths from being wasted in different directions. Not everyone in a team must appear to be the leader. Every member who performs a distinct role faithfully at the right moment is a co-leader of the result. “What can I do?” is a necessary question. “What can our abilities achieve when connected?” is even more powerful.

Which problem are you facing alone that might reveal a new solution if you connect three people with different abilities?
