English

Responding after danger reaches us may show presence of mind. Recognising a signal, assessing it, and acting before danger arrives is foresight. The Panchatantra story of the three fish values both abilities, while warning us how passive fatalism—“whatever must happen will happen”—can make us surrender an opportunity that was still in our hands.

The story: One warning—three decisions

Three fish lived as friends in a great lake. Their names reveal their dispositions. In Sanskrit they are Anāgatavidhātā, Pratyutpannamati, and Yadbhaviṣya. Arthur W. Ryder renders them as Forethought, Readywit, and Fatalist.

One day, fishermen passing along the bank remarked that the pond contained many fish and that they should return with their nets the next day. Forethought overheard them. It did not panic at a vague rumour; it noticed the specificity of the warning. The source of danger, its timing, and its method were all clear. It therefore called the other two fish and urged them to leave at once for another body of water.

Readywit replied, “I have lived here a long time and cannot move in such haste. If the fishermen come, I will devise a way to protect myself when the occasion arises.” Fatalist dismissed the warning: “Who knows whether they will actually come? Why abandon the lake of one’s birth over a little talk? What must happen will happen.” It decided to remain.

Realising that their minds were settled, Forethought moved immediately to another body of water. The fishermen arrived the following day and cast their net. Readywit was caught but pretended to be dead. Believing it had died without their help, the fishermen drew it out and laid it on the bank. It promptly wriggled back into the water and escaped. Fatalist struggled in the meshes and was killed.

The first fish: Prevention before rescue

Forethought neither fought the danger nor waited to see whether it would become trapped. It reduced exposure before loss occurred. This should not be confused with running away in fear. Fear may react to an unsupported imagination; foresight combines a credible signal, the possible cost of harm, and an available alternative before deciding.

Prevention rarely looks dramatic. When a precaution succeeds, the disaster that did not happen remains invisible. This is why people who prepare early are sometimes accused of overthinking. Yet when a small present action can prevent a large future loss, preparation is not weakness. It is responsibility.

The second fish: Resourcefulness is valuable—but risky

Readywit was intelligent too. When the crisis arrived, it remained inventive, acted convincingly, and escaped. We cannot anticipate every danger in life; in genuinely unforeseen situations, adaptability, courage, and quick thinking may save us.

But its success should not be misread. Readywit entered the net, depended on what the fishermen chose to do, and received only one chance to escape. The fact that the tactic worked does not make delay the better decision. A person who wins at the last moment may indeed be skilful, but sometimes luck has also carried part of the burden.

The third fish: Acceptance is not abandonment of action

Fatalist did not examine the warning; it reduced it to trivial gossip. Leaving a familiar lake felt uncomfortable, so it gave that discomfort a philosophical name: “What must happen will happen.” Fate was not a mature acceptance of what lay beyond control. It became an excuse to postpone a decision.

Accepting what we cannot control can bring peace. Refusing a precaution that remains within our control and then handing the outcome to fate is negligence. We cannot command the rain, but we can decide whether to carry an umbrella. We cannot control a market, but we can choose savings, diversification, and care with debt. Not every result is ours to determine; that does not require us to abandon every effort.

Foresight is not perfect prediction

A farsighted person does not claim to predict the future with certainty. The useful questions are not, “Will this definitely happen?” but, “How plausible is it? What will the loss be if it occurs? What low-cost action is available now?” This approach neither magnifies every risk nor dismisses it.

Running after every rumour is not foresight. We should ask whether a warning is credible, specific, near enough to matter, and actionable. In this fable the signal is not a general fear: the fishermen, the lake, the nets, and the next day are all identified. The more specific a credible signal becomes, the stronger our justification for delay must be.

Delay also has a price

Even when we do not make a decision, time continues to make one for us. An easy route available today may close tomorrow. While a problem is small, its remedy may be inexpensive; once it becomes a crisis, time, money, freedom, and alternatives can all shrink.

Forethought retained a choice. Readywit was left with a single chance. Fatalist eventually had no choice at all. This is a central principle of risk management: early action protects not only against loss, but also preserves freedom to choose.

All three fish live within us

We do not display one disposition in every part of life. In some matters we prepare early; in others we improvise at the last moment; and in still others we postpone action in the hope that the problem will disappear. The story is therefore not a tool for dividing other people into three fixed groups. It is a mirror for identifying which fish is speaking within us before a decision.

  • Forethought: notices a signal and acts before the loss arrives.
  • Readywit: responds creatively after the crisis has begun.
  • Fatalism: uses uncertainty as a reason to avoid an uncomfortable decision.

The lesson in modern life

In education: When the examination date is known, a daily study plan follows the first fish. Studying through the final night and somehow managing the paper resembles the second. Entering unprepared because “something will come” resembles the third.

In financial life: An emergency fund, suitable insurance, controlled debt, and secure records are foresight. Searching hurriedly for expensive credit after income stops may show resourcefulness, but it is a costly route. Assuming that trouble will never arise exposes a family to avoidable risk.

In health and safety: Reasonable precautions, timely checks, and attention to clear warning signs are preventive action. The lesson is not to diagnose ourselves out of fear, but to consult the appropriate professional at the right time.

At work and in institutions: Updating skills, backing up essential data, and designing systems that do not depend on one person follow the first fish. Finding an overnight substitute after failure follows the second. Saying “nothing has happened so far” despite repeated warnings follows the third.

In digital life: Strong passwords, two-factor authentication, software updates, and caution with suspicious links are not merely post-incident tasks. Clever recovery may help after data is lost, but an earlier backup is safer.

Leadership: Protect the system that carries warnings

A sound leader does more than solve a problem after it appears. Such a leader builds an environment in which weak signals can be heard early. If an employee, student, or colleague who identifies a risk is labelled an alarmist, the institution silences its Forethought. Every warning need not prove correct, but there should be a method for hearing it, examining evidence, and assigning responsibility.

A contingency plan is not a vote of no confidence in the first plan. It is a mature acknowledgement that the world contains uncertainty. Foresight prepares the route; resourcefulness adjusts it when circumstances change. The strongest decisions make room for both.

Connections within this series

The three-fish fable appears among the warnings inside the birds-and-ocean narrative; it reminds us that respecting a small signal is itself an expression of resolve. In the talkative turtle, sound advice was understood but abandoned under pressure; Fatalist rejects sound advice at the beginning. And just as strategy overcomes force in the crows and the black snake, an early decision here removes the need to fight the net at all.

Five questions for foresight

  1. What is the signal? Am I responding to evidence or imagination?
  2. What is the cost if the risk occurs? Is it a minor inconvenience or an irreversible loss?
  3. What low-cost action is available now? Would a call, backup, application, saving, or small preparation be enough to begin?
  4. Which option will delay close? Might I lose a deadline, money, health, trust, or an alternative route?
  5. What is the second route if the first fails? Have I left room for resourcefulness alongside foresight?

Today’s practice: One small action for one visible risk

Choose one matter you have repeatedly postponed with the phrase “I will deal with it later.” It may be a backup, pending application, study plan, overdue payment, or necessary appointment. Write the risk in one sentence, then complete the first action that can be done in fifteen minutes today. You need not solve the entire problem in one day; you do need to open the first route out of the lake.

My view

Life does not warn us about every danger in advance. Neither does it ask us to ignore every warning that it gives. Foresight will not free us from all hardship; it keeps more choices available when hardship comes. Resourcefulness is a great strength. Yet changing course before the net falls gives us more freedom than escaping cleverly after we are caught.

Which small signal visible in your life today could prevent a larger problem tomorrow if you act on it now?
