Not everyone around us changes our character, but they can change the risk we carry.

Access Map
English
The story: The cautious louse and the bug that could not wait
In the folds of the fine coverlet on a king’s luxurious bed, a louse lived with her family. She emerged only after the king was sound asleep, fed without causing immediate pain, and quietly returned to her hiding place. Her conduct was not defensible, but she understood the danger of her position, the importance of timing, and the self-control required to remain undiscovered.
One day, a wandering bedbug drifted onto the bed. Delighted by the soft mattress, perfumed linen, and royal surroundings, it began hopping about. The louse noticed the stranger and warned it at once: “This is an extremely dangerous place. Leave before anyone discovers you.”
The bug refused to go. “I am your guest,” it pleaded. “I have tasted many kinds of blood but never a king’s. Please give me one opportunity.” Repeated appeals softened the louse, who felt that turning away a guest would be discourteous. She finally agreed, but laid down clear conditions: wait until the king was deeply asleep, bite gently near his feet, and do nothing in haste.
The bug promised to obey. Yet while the king had only begun to doze, hunger, desire, and impatience overpowered the promise. It bit the king sharply on the back. Awakened by the burning pain, the king sprang up and ordered his servants to search the bed thoroughly.
At the first sign of danger, the bug slipped into a crevice in the bed. The servants instead found the louse and her family in the folds of the fabric. They did not investigate which insect had delivered the painful bite; they killed the ones they could see. The bug broke the rule, but the louse’s family paid the price of its impatience.
Stating a boundary is not enough—protect it
The louse recognised the danger in advance. She explained the right time, place, and method. Yet she still granted a stranger access to her most sensitive environment. Her central failure was not ignorance of risk; it was opening the door to a risk she had already identified.
In life, saying “You must not do this” is not, by itself, a functioning boundary. If violation never leads us to reduce access, withdraw responsibility, or end cooperation, the boundary remains only a request. A boundary is not merely the behaviour we want from others; it is also the decision we will make when that behaviour is not respected.
Was the louse completely innocent?
A careful reading does not make the louse a morally innocent hero. She too was secretly feeding on the king. The lesson, therefore, is not that wrongdoing becomes safe when performed with discipline. Any unethical or concealed arrangement already stands on unstable ground; adding an impulsive partner multiplies its risk.
The louse also mistook experience for moral wisdom. Because she had remained undetected for a long time, she assumed the situation was under her control. Her second error was overconfidence: she believed she could control the newcomer as well. Knowing how to manage our own conduct does not mean we can manage another person’s hunger, ambition, fear, or impulse.
What does “bad company” really mean?
Bad company should never be defined by a person’s birth, class, income, education, or one isolated mistake. It is revealed through recurring behaviour. People who refuse to respect our “no,” make promises easily and break them quickly, use our name or access for private gain, disappear when consequences arrive, and push us forward while avoiding accountability create dangerous company.
Good company does not approve everything we do; it stops us when necessary. It does not conceal wrongdoing; it helps us correct it. It respects our limits and does not transfer the cost of its choices to us. Genuine friendship shares freedom, but it also shares accountability.
Is a promise enough for trust?
The bug verbally accepted every condition. It may even have intended, in that moment, to keep its promise. Yet good intention alone is insufficient grounds for trust. Reliable conduct requires intention, self-control, a consistent record, the capacity to tolerate delay, and readiness to accept responsibility when something goes wrong.
“He is a good person,” “She has promised,” and “It is only this once” may comfort us, but they are not risk assessments. How does the person respond when a desire is delayed? Do they respect a rule under pressure? Can they admit a small mistake? Do they remain present when consequences arrive? Observable answers to these questions are stronger evidence than reassuring words.
Kindness with limits is not cruelty
The louse applied a good value—hospitality—without considering the context. Hospitality does not require giving every person access to every space. We may help someone without risking our home, money, official records, passwords, reputation, or the safety of others.
- Say “no” with kindness: give a brief reason and keep the decision firm.
- Offer lower-risk help: suggest a safe alternative instead of granting full access.
- Begin with limited responsibility: observe consistency before extending greater trust.
- Protect sensitive access: an OTP, password, bank account, official login, or signature is not a gift of friendship.
- Keep an exit route: decide in advance how cooperation or access will change if a condition is violated.
Louse-and-bug situations in modern life
In student life: when a friend proposes malpractice in an examination, it is not enough to think, “I will not do it; I will merely remain nearby.” If the incident is discovered, everyone in the immediate group may face suspicion. Good friendship does not stand beside a friend’s wrongdoing; it tries to pull the friend away from it.
At work: a colleague may ask to use your login, sign a document you have not read, or alter a date after the event. The task may be theirs, but the audit trail will carry your name. The intention to “help” does not erase responsibility.
In financial matters: routing another person’s money through your bank account, lending your KYC or SIM, or guaranteeing an obligation you do not understand is not a test of friendship. It transfers legal and financial risk to you.
In the digital world: forwarding an unknown link to a group, sharing a password, or supporting an unverified allegation from your account follows the same pattern. The original idea may belong to someone else, but the digital record becomes associated with you.
Six questions for evaluating company
- When I say “no,” does this person respect it, or use guilt and pressure?
- Do their words and actions match consistently?
- Do they ask me to bend a rule for immediate gain?
- When they make a mistake, do they admit and repair it, or shift blame?
- How much access does this relationship have to my name, money, digital identity, or reputation?
- Does this company make good choices easier, or merely make bad choices easier to justify?
Connections within this series
The Ashadhabhuti story warns us not to treat a humble appearance as proof of honesty; this story adds that a promise is not proof of self-control. The heron and the crab teaches alert observation in the presence of selfish deception. The lion and the rabbit shows how strength without emotional control can destroy itself; here, the bug’s inability to wait endangers those who trusted it.
Today’s practice: Make an access map
Write five words on a page: time, name/reputation, money, digital access, peace of mind. For each one, note who currently has access and how much. What visible evidence supports that person’s reliability? What one clear boundary is now necessary? The aim is not to end relationships abruptly; it is to match access with demonstrated responsibility.
My view
Our company may not determine our destiny completely, but it certainly influences the choices available to us and the risks we carry. We need not view every relationship with suspicion, nor must we give every relationship the same degree of access. Let us be kind, but discerning; trusting, but attentive to behaviour; loyal, but never at the cost of our values, safety, and responsibility.
Which relationship in your life is being continued with kindness, but now needs one clear boundary?
