English

Our power may be limited, but our purpose need not be small. Determination is not the act of colliding alone with a mighty force. It is the discipline of defining the problem, standing together, seeking wisdom, and carrying a just claim to the level where responsibility can act.

The story: A small nest and a vast ocean

A pair of small plovers lived beside the sea. When the time came to lay her eggs, the female asked that they find a safe place beyond the reach of the waves. She had recognised the risk in advance: a rising tide could carry away their young. The male, however, exaggerated his own importance and dismissed her warning, believing that the ocean would not dare harm them. She finally laid the eggs on the same shore.

The ocean had heard their conversation and decided to test the male bird’s boast. While both birds were away searching for food, a powerful wave swept the eggs into the sea. When the female returned to the empty nest, she was overcome with grief. She reminded her husband that she had warned him, but she did not allow the moment to end with blame. She demanded that they seek a remedy.

In anger, the male bird vowed to empty the ocean one beakful at a time. His mate did not reject his determination; she gave it direction. She urged him to seek the help of other birds. They gathered, struck the ocean with their wings, and carried clods and dust in their beaks in an attempt to fill it. Their effort was sincere, but it was not equal to the scale of the problem.

One bird then proposed consulting an experienced old gander. After hearing their loss, the old bird advised them to approach Garuda, king of the birds. What had begun as the private grief of one pair was now presented as a question of justice and dignity for the wider community of birds.

At that moment, Vishnu had summoned Garuda for an important mission. Garuda replied that he would not report for service while an injustice against the smallest of those under his protection remained unaddressed. Vishnu came personally, understood the grievance, and warned the ocean that it would be dried up unless the eggs were restored. Realising that the appeal of the tiny birds had reached the highest seat of responsibility, the frightened ocean returned the eggs.

Self-knowledge must come before determination

If we read this merely as “small birds defeated the ocean,” we miss its first warning. The male bird had shown poor foresight when choosing where the eggs should be laid. He ignored a valid risk signal and overestimated his own capacity. The determination that follows does not justify the negligence that came before it.

Genuine confidence in human development does not mean pretending that danger does not exist. It means answering honestly: How strong are we? How large is the problem? What damage is possible? What could have been prevented? Courage without self-knowledge becomes carelessness; courage joined with self-knowledge becomes strategy.

From solitary persistence to organised action

The male plover first imagined emptying the ocean by himself. He then gathered the other birds. When their direct effort proved inadequate, they sought the counsel of the old gander. The appeal moved from there to Garuda and ultimately to Vishnu. The goal did not change; the method did.

That is mature persistence. Repeating a failed method without reflection is stubbornness; retaining the goal while adapting the method is determination. Power begins to expand when the question “What can I possibly do alone?” becomes “Whom can we approach together, and what path can we build?”

Unity is more than numbers—it is collective efficacy

Each bird could carry very little dust, but their unity made the grievance visible. In psychology, collective efficacy is a group’s shared belief that coordinated action can produce change. It is not merely a slogan. It becomes influence through divided responsibility, mutual courage, sustained action, and credible representation.

Yet a crowd is not automatically wise. A group still needs sound knowledge, an ethical purpose, and responsible leadership. Once the birds recognised the limits of their immediate action, the old gander’s counsel converted their anger into an effective course.

Giving institutional strength to a small voice

From the birds to the old gander, from the gander to Garuda, and from Garuda to Vishnu, the story traces how a grievance can travel toward accountable authority. The birds did not win by suddenly becoming stronger than the ocean. They won by building a route through which their just claim could reach someone able and obliged to act.

Modern equivalents include grievance mechanisms, student representatives, employee channels, consumer forums, local bodies, and regulatory institutions. Using such a system is not a confession of weakness. Presenting evidence, following a process, and escalating to the correct level are signs of civic and organisational maturity.

Leadership adopts the justice of the weakest as its own responsibility

Garuda gives the story its moral centre. He had not personally lost the eggs, yet he refused to dismiss the injury as “their problem.” Vishnu, in turn, did not see Garuda’s protest merely as disobedience; he examined the justice behind it.

A good leader hears not only the powerful voice nearby, but also the quiet voice that has travelled the farthest to be heard. If the person with the least status in an institution cannot obtain justice, leadership is not made complete by success at the top. The greatness of authority lies not in how many people it controls, but in how fairly it protects even the weakest.

Where does this story appear in modern life?

In student life: A concern raised by one student may be overlooked. When the issue is presented with clear examples, the views of affected classmates, and a workable solution through a class representative or teacher, a path to response is created.

At work: General dissatisfaction may not correct an unequal workload, harassment, or an unfair policy. Dates, incidents, and impact should be recorded; appropriate colleagues should be consulted; and the matter should move through the defined grievance process to an accountable authority.

In the community: A streetlight, drinking-water, road, or public-service failure may look small from a distance. When affected households document it, submit a written representation, and follow up through the relevant local representative or official, a private inconvenience acquires public visibility.

In the digital and financial world: A failed transaction, unfair charge, or deceptive service should not be met with embarrassed silence. Preserve receipts, screenshots, and complaint numbers; move from the service provider to its grievance officer and, when necessary, to the appropriate regulatory platform.

In families: A fear should not be dismissed because it comes from someone younger or economically dependent. The female plover’s warning, initially ignored, proved correct. The softest voice in a family may sometimes detect danger first.

Connections within this series

Dantila and Gorambha shows the consequences of humiliating someone considered insignificant; today’s story shows why institutions must make room for the justice of the small. In the crows and the black snake, vulnerable creatures remove danger through the right help and strategy. If the lion and the rabbit teaches that intelligence can overcome raw strength, the birds and the ocean add that intelligence becomes stronger when joined by unity, counsel, and accountable leadership.

Six steps from determination to results

  1. Accept the facts: Define the loss or injustice without minimising it.
  2. Examine your own role: Ask whether a warning was ignored or a preventable risk was taken.
  3. Measure the power gap: Identify the difference between the capacity you have and the capacity the problem requires.
  4. Build a coalition: Unite affected people around common facts and a fair objective.
  5. Seek experienced counsel: Consult someone who can convert emotion into a workable course of action.
  6. Escalate with evidence: Identify who can decide, and state clearly the fair remedy you seek.

Today’s practice: Draw a “determination map”

Choose one problem you have abandoned with the thought, “I am too small to change this.” On paper, create five headings: the problem—my first small action—people who can join me—a person who can advise us—the accountable authority who can act. Write one answer beneath each and set a 48-hour deadline for the first action. An ocean is not emptied in a day, but every just journey begins with one clear, disciplined step.

My view

It is not that small people have no power; their power is often scattered. Determination organises it. Unity gives it a voice. Wisdom gives it direction. Responsible leadership carries it toward a just result. The story does not ask us to become as vast as the ocean. It asks us to build a path from a tiny beak to the level where justice can be done.

Which problem have you abandoned because “our strength is not enough”—and what first organised step can you take today?
