A mask may change how we appear; under pressure, our habits reveal who we really are.
Identity–Evidence Audit
English
The story: A colour gave him a kingdom—and a voice removed the mask
One night, a jackal living near a town entered the city in search of food. Street dogs spotted him and gave chase. Running for his life, he slipped into a dyer’s house and fell into a large vat of indigo. After the dogs went away, he climbed out and returned to the forest.
The forest animals had never seen a creature of that blue colour. Lions, tigers, elephants, deer, and the others drew back in fear at the unfamiliar sight. Recognising their fear, the jackal did not explain what had happened. Instead, he announced, “Indra has specially sent me because the forest has no king. You may now live under my protection.”
The animals believed him and bowed before him. He appointed the lion as prime minister, assigned another important office to the tiger, and gave duties to the other animals. But he drove away every member of his own jackal community. He knew that those who shared his origins might recognise the truth beneath his appearance. For a time, he ruled through authority built on fear and trust built on ignorance.
One day, he heard a pack of jackals howling nearby. The familiar call made him forget his role and the danger surrounding it. In natural excitement, he raised his own voice and howled. That single sound revealed the truth: the supposed extraordinary creature sent from the heavens was only an ordinary jackal stained blue. Realising that they had been deceived, the animals brought his false reign to an end. An outer colour had given him a throne; his natural voice took it away.
A false identity is not born in a single moment
The jackal did not deliberately enter the indigo vat to become blue; that was an accident. But the moment he understood that the other animals had mistaken him for someone extraordinary, he faced a moral choice: tell the truth, or exploit their assumption. He chose the second path. His false identity therefore did not begin with the colour. It began when he refused to correct a false impression and converted it into authority.
In human life, a major deception often begins with a small silence: accepting praise for work we did not do, speaking as an expert on something we do not understand, performing a role far beyond our qualification, or deliberately preserving an exaggerated impression that benefits us. It may appear rewarding at first. Yet every new lie creates another obligation to protect the earlier one.
Confidence is different from a false persona
Taking on a new responsibility, stretching our ability, and saying “I will learn” are not forms of pretence. They are expressions of the confidence needed for growth. A false persona begins when we claim qualifications we do not possess, take credit for work we did not perform, or intentionally mislead others in order to secure their trust.
The distinction is simple: confidence accepts responsibility for building competence; a false identity demands recognition without competence. Authentic growth is not ashamed to say, “I am still learning.” A fabricated identity remains constantly afraid that its limits will be exposed.
Before deceiving others, he deceived himself
At first, the jackal may have known clearly that he was acting. But as respect, food, and power continued to arrive, he began to treat the role as his true identity. He mistook the bows of others for proof of merit, office for evidence of competence, and fear for trust. That is self-deception.
The immediate reward of dishonesty gradually silences our inner warning. Repeated praise does not change the truth, but it may weaken our willingness to face it. The more we invest in a fabricated persona, the harder it appears to step out of it. Correcting a false impression at an early stage is therefore not weakness; it is the courage to prevent a larger future loss.
Why did he drive away the other jackals?
The blue jackal feared those who had known him before more than he feared the other animals. They knew his earlier appearance, voice, and habits. That is why he excluded them as soon as he gained authority. Witnesses who can speak the truth are uncomfortable companions for a false identity.
The same pattern can appear in human behaviour. Looking down on old colleagues after gaining a new position, distancing ourselves from people who offer honest feedback, surrounding ourselves only with admirers, and hiding our origins are not signs of growth; they are signs of insecurity. Authentic growth does not reject the past. It honestly acknowledges the journey by which it moved beyond it.
Why did his natural voice break the disguise?
The jackal was exposed not by his colour, but by one moment of lost control. When excitement, fear, anger, pressure, or temptation rises, we tend to return to the habits we have practised most. Character is therefore revealed less by what we say on a public stage and more by the decisions we make when nobody appears to be watching.
Yet the story should not be read as the pessimistic claim that people can never change. Human beings can change. But real change requires more than new clothes, a new office, a revised bio, or a different social circle. It demands repeated practice of new values, openness to feedback, responsibility for mistakes, and consistency under pressure. Colour changes appearance; practice changes character.
The “blue colours” of modern life
In student life: submitting another person’s assignment, using an AI-generated answer without understanding it, or claiming credit for work not done in a project may produce a good result briefly. When an explanation is required, the gap in understanding becomes visible. Building the capacity to learn is more durable than securing one mark.
At work: exaggerating skills on a CV, presenting another person’s work as an achievement, or using a designation as a substitute for competence may open an initial door. When a real decision, problem, or responsibility arrives, however, a reputation without evidence cannot stand.
In the digital world: selected successes, edited images, borrowed ideas, and purchased followers can create an impressive persona. Visibility, however, is not credibility. Consistency of content, respect for sources, willingness to correct an error, and alignment between online and offline conduct build genuine trust.
In leadership: grand language, symbols, and titles may create an effect for a while. Leadership still requires knowledge, judgment, fairness, responsibility, and the ability to hear criticism. Obedience produced by fear is not trust; it is merely silence that lasts until circumstances change.
In relationships: trying to appear perfect at all times, hiding our needs and limits, or acting like someone else in order to be loved does not create closeness; it creates exhaustion. A genuine relationship rests not on an impressive performance but on the safety to tell the truth.
The animals who believed him also have a lesson
The wrongdoing in the story belongs to the jackal. Still, the decisions of the other animals contain a warning. They treated unusual colour as distinction, confident speech as evidence of authority, and an unknown appearance as proof of divine appointment. They surrendered judgment without asking a single question.
This is not about blaming those who are deceived; it is about remembering the due diligence that protects trust. Appearance, title, follower count, expensive language, or self-confidence cannot independently prove competence. Before assigning responsibility, we should examine past conduct, visible evidence, conflicts of interest, responses to questions, and systems of accountability. If the Ashadhabhuti story warns us not to treat appearance as proof of honesty, the blue jackal warns us not to treat novelty as qualification.
Six practices for building an authentic identity
- Examine your claims: What real evidence supports each important statement I make about myself?
- Build competence before recognition: practise the skill required by a role before chasing its title.
- Reduce the gap between words and actions: build credibility by keeping small promises consistently.
- Keep truth-tellers close: one colleague who disagrees respectfully is more valuable than many admirers.
- Correct false impressions early: saying “That credit is not mine” or “I do not know this yet” does not reduce dignity; it strengthens trust.
- Practise values under pressure: small decisions made out of public view build the character everyone later sees.
Connections within this series
In the weaver who posed as Vishnu, love, hope, and opportunity lead a person to impersonate someone else; here, an accidental colour grows into the desire for power. The louse and the bedbug teaches us to observe conduct before granting access; the blue jackal similarly reminds us to test consistency rather than confidence.
Today’s practice: An identity–evidence audit
Write three headings on a page: the identity I present—the evidence I possess—the competence I need to build. Take one claim each from education, work, relationships, and your digital presence, and complete the table honestly. Where the evidence is weak, do not invest in enlarging the impression. Choose one small weekly action that enlarges the competence.
My view
There is nothing wrong with showing the world our best self. But when the image we present becomes detached from the truth we live, growth stops and performance begins. A false identity becomes a burden that must be protected every day; an authentic identity becomes a strength that can be improved every day. We do not need less confidence. We need more honesty, practice, and evidence beneath our confidence.
In your life, what needs improvement today—the visible “colour,” or the real competence beneath it?
