English

Recent PMI data indicate that weakness is continuing in China’s economy. In August, China’s official Manufacturing PMI rose from 49.2 in July to 49.8. Although this was an improvement, a reading below 50 means that manufacturing activity remained in contraction. The Non-manufacturing PMI stood at 49.0 and the Composite PMI at 49.5. Production and new orders improved somewhat, but the employment index remained at 48.7. The recovery therefore remains uneven across the Chinese economy.

A Change in China’s Growth Model

These figures point to a change in China’s growth model. In the past, infrastructure, construction and exports were major pillars of Chinese economic growth. Today, slower domestic consumption, pressure on the real-estate sector and uncertainty about employment are reducing the pace of growth. This change is a challenge for the global economy, but it may also create strategic opportunities for India through the reorganisation of supply chains.

Supply Chain

India’s Opportunity in Supply-Chain Reorganisation

Over the past few years, global companies have recognised the risks of depending too heavily on a single country for their production systems. The pandemic, trade disputes, geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions have reinforced this concern.

As a result, many international companies are adopting a “China+1 Strategy”. This does not mean abandoning China completely. It means establishing production capacity in another country alongside existing operations in China.

India could benefit from this shift in electronics, mobile phones, pharmaceuticals, auto components, textiles, chemicals, machinery and renewable-energy equipment. World Bank analysis indicates that supply-chain diversification is creating new foreign-investment opportunities for countries such as India. However, Vietnam, Indonesia and Mexico are competing for the same investments.

India’s Manufacturing Opportunity

To benefit from the opportunity created by China’s weakness, India must move beyond assembly. It needs to strengthen domestic capabilities in components, product design, research, testing and branding.

According to the Government of India, as of 31 March 2026, the PLI schemes had attracted actual investments of more than ₹2.40 lakh crore. They had generated over 14.15 lakh direct and indirect jobs, while exports facilitated through the schemes exceeded ₹15.2 lakh crore.

India has also made significant progress in electronics. During FY 2025–26, electronics production reached ₹13.11 lakh crore and electronics exports reached ₹4.24 lakh crore. Government data show that mobile-phone exports reached ₹2.59 lakh crore.

These are encouraging beginnings, but they are not sufficient by themselves. India must become stronger in printed circuit boards, batteries, camera modules, sensors, displays, semiconductor packaging and precision machinery to achieve genuine domestic value addition.

Jobs, MSMEs and Regional Development

When large companies invest in India, an ecosystem of small and medium enterprises can develop around them. New business opportunities may emerge in packaging, transport, warehousing, maintenance, quality testing, security, food services and logistics.

This can increase employment opportunities in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. Young people may find jobs in technical training, machine operation, digital manufacturing and quality control.

However, India should create more than low-wage assembly jobs. It must generate employment that improves skills, productivity and incomes. If Indian MSMEs become suppliers to international companies, their production standards can also improve.

FDI and Technology Transfer

International companies that invest outside China can bring India not only capital, but also advanced technology, quality standards and efficient management practices.

Indian companies can learn global production standards. New research centres, design facilities and skill-development programmes may emerge. Over time, this can improve Indian productivity and integrate domestic industries more deeply into global value chains.

The Government has stated that the Electronics Components Manufacturing Scheme aims to attract ₹59,350 crore in investments and create 91,600 direct jobs. This highlights the need for India to move from assembly towards component manufacturing.

Commodity prices

Possible Relief from Commodity Prices

China is one of the world’s largest consumers of industrial commodities. If construction and manufacturing demand weaken there, international demand for crude oil, coal, copper and iron ore could also decline.

This could provide some benefit to India. Lower oil and metal prices may reduce the import bill, inflation and pressure on the current account. However, if China’s slowdown affects the global economy, demand for Indian exports could also weaken. Therefore, this is a conditional opportunity, not a guaranteed benefit.

The Risk within China’s Weakness

If domestic demand in China weakens, Chinese companies may try to sell excess production in other countries at lower prices. This may give Indian consumers cheaper goods, but it can place pressure on Indian MSMEs and manufacturers.

India should therefore apply appropriate quality standards, anti-dumping measures and a balanced tariff policy. Domestic industries should be protected from unfair competition, but India should not isolate itself from international competition.

ఈ అవకాశాన్ని ఉపయోగించుకోవాలంటే భారత్ logistics, ports, electricity, land availability, customs, skills, research and development మరియు policy stabilityపై దృష్టి పెట్టాలి.

My View

China’s economic weakness is only an opportunity for India; it does not automatically become an Indian success. To use this opportunity, India must focus on logistics, ports, electricity, land availability, customs, skills, research and development, and policy stability.

India should not remain a country that merely assembles imported components. It must build a complete value chain extending from components to design, technology, production and global brands.

Conclusion

India will not immediately become the world’s manufacturing leader simply because China weakens. However, with the right policies, investment and effective implementation, the China+1 Strategy can provide India with significant opportunities for investment, employment, exports and technological development in the coming years.

China’s weakness is not India’s victory… it is a rare opportunity to work towards victory.
