Turning point: product నుంచి platform-like organisation

Personal computing architecture మారినప్పుడు, hardware margins మారినప్పుడు, global IT services demand పెరిగినప్పుడు HCL తన operating modelను మార్చుకుంది. Technology cycles old strengthsను త్వరగా obsolete చేస్తాయి.

Foundation schools, universities, arts and talent-development institutionsను నిర్మించింది.

Nadar storyలో team ownership, long horizon, reinvestment మరియు talent development ఒకే threadలా కనిపిస్తాయి.

Building before the market looked obvious

In 1976, when computing in India was scarce, electrical engineer Shiv Nadar and a small team founded HCL around the belief that Indian technologists could build, not merely import, computing capability. The early constraints—capital, components, foreign exchange and customer awareness—made disciplined learning more important than scale.

The turning point was repeated reinvention

HCL did not remain defined by calculators or early computers. As architectures and markets changed, it expanded through hardware, software, services and global delivery. Technology cycles repeatedly threatened old advantages; the response was to develop new skills rather than defend yesterday’s product forever.

From enterprise to education

In 1994 Nadar established the Shiv Nadar Foundation, applying a long-term institution-building approach to education. The continuity is striking: assemble talent, invest patiently, measure impact over decades and create systems that outlast the founder.

Success principle and youth lesson

A technology company’s durable asset is not one product; it is the organisation’s capacity to learn through transitions. Build teams for endurance, treat the business model as adaptable, and convert personal success into institutions.

Reflective question: What capability are you building today that will remain valuable even when the current product or platform changes?
