Internet business

Setback and response

Success principle

Seeing the signal before the market looked obvious

Sanjeev Bikhchandani noticed how intensely employees read job listings in business magazines. The information was scattered, but demand was visible. After studying economics at St. Stephen’s College and completing his PGDM at IIM Ahmedabad, he left a corporate path and began building a small enterprise. Naukri.com launched in 1997, before internet recruitment was an obvious Indian opportunity.

From listings to a marketplace

A newspaper advertisement expires quickly; a digital database can be searched by role, city and experience. Job seekers gained convenience, while recruiters gained reach and database access. The hard part was not merely building a website—it was earning trust on both sides and converting recruiter value into paid revenue.

Challenge, turning point and setback

Connectivity was limited, online payments were uncommon, and sales required patient explanation. The dot-com downturn later tested cash discipline. The response was focus: strengthen recruitment, serve paying customers, encourage repeat use and control costs. Info Edge eventually expanded, but the core lesson remained marketplace discipline.

Success principle and youth lessons

Observe repeated behaviour, validate willingness to pay before chasing scale, and retain frugality after capital arrives. Technology matters, but trust, complete information, search quality and patient sales often create the durable advantage.

Reflective question

What information do people around you repeatedly struggle to find—and could you turn that friction into a trustworthy service?
