English
The story — narrated by Vishwamitra
At the Sona river, Rama asked about the land. I told him of Kusha’s lineage and King Kushanabha, who had one hundred daughters. While they walked in a garden, Vayu saw them and asked them to accept him, promising divine youth and immortality.
The sisters answered together. They acknowledged his power but refused to make the marriage decision under pressure, saying their father would choose in accordance with their family’s dharma. Angered, Vayu entered their bodies and deformed them. Even in pain, they did not use their ascetic power for revenge. They returned together and told their father.
Tradition note: this retelling follows Bala Kanda Sarga 32. A modern reader may recognise a consent principle; the original narrative expresses it through obedience to the father’s decision. Those contexts should be distinguished, not collapsed.
🌱 Human Development Perspective
Consent remains meaningful only when a person can refuse despite unequal power. An attractive reward does not turn coercion into free choice. Collective solidarity can help individuals hold a boundary that would be frightening to defend alone.
🌱 Life Lesson
Stating a boundary before power is courage; respecting that boundary is real strength.
