Avenue Supermarts 12 May 2000న incorporate అయింది; DMart తొలి store 2002లో Mumbaiలోని Powaiలో ప్రారంభమైంది.
Supplier relationships, limited but relevant assortment, inventory movement, store productivity, local market knowledge, rent and property economics—ఇవి customerకు కనిపించని engine.
Turning point: repeatable store economics
Setbacks
Organised retailలో real-estate cost, inventory errors, rapid expansion, online competition పెద్ద risks.
Success principle
Customerకు promise—quality products at good value—సరళం.
From value investing to value retail
After establishing himself as a value investor, Radhakishan Damani chose to test his understanding of the Indian consumer through an operating business. Avenue Supermarts was incorporated in 2000, and the first DMart store opened in Powai in 2002.
The proposition was simple: relevant everyday products, dependable quality and consistently good value. The execution was not simple. Supplier terms, assortment, inventory turns, store productivity, property economics and overhead control had to work together every day.
Challenge, turning point and scale
DMart took roughly eight years to reach its first ten stores. Company accounts describe this as patient validation of both profitability and scalability. The turning point was not a publicity event; it was evidence that the same store economics could be repeated in another location.
By the end of FY2025-26, the chain had opened its 500th store. The scale matters, but the more transferable lesson is how expansion followed operating proof. Professional management and a continuing EDLC/EDLP discipline helped convert founder conviction into an institution.
Success principle and youth lesson
A simple customer promise needs a demanding operating system. Young entrepreneurs should validate unit economics before pursuing footprint, treat working capital as strategy, and build processes that can survive beyond the founder’s daily supervision.
Reflective question
What is the one promise your customer should experience every day—and what invisible discipline would make that promise repeatable?
