A great teacher does more than explain a lesson—he awakens the desire to learn.

A Classroom That Remains Alive in Memory
The classes of Prof. K. Seshaiah of the Department of Commerce, Sri Venkateswara University, remain vivid in my memory. He taught landmark experiments from Management and Psychology theoretically. Yet his dramatic narration, changes in voice, expressive gestures and carefully chosen examples made every experiment appear to unfold before our eyes.
His classroom became a laboratory and the blackboard became a stage. We were not merely listeners; we participated mentally in every situation he described. No student wanted to miss his class. We waited eagerly for his lectures and remained absorbed from the beginning to the end.
When Experiments Came Alive
Through the Hawthorne Studies, he explained the influence of recognition, supervision, communication and informal groups at the workplace. Pavlov helped us understand learning through association; Thorndike demonstrated trial and error; Skinner showed the influence of reinforcement and consequences; Bandura revealed the power of observation and modelling; and Asch illustrated the pressure that a group can exert on individual judgement.
Concepts that appeared as definitions in a textbook became living scenes of human behaviour in his classroom. His teaching silently conveyed an enduring lesson: if a theory is to remain in the learner’s memory, it must be connected with a story, a context, an emotion and a question.
Was It Experiential Learning?
In its conventional sense, experiential learning requires learners to participate in an activity, observe its outcome, reflect upon it, connect it with a concept and apply the learning to a new situation. We did not physically conduct these experiments in Prof. K. Seshaiah’s classes. Nevertheless, his teaching created an experiential effect. Through imagination, emotional involvement, observation and reflection, we experienced the theory mentally.
It would therefore be inadequate to describe his method as a mere lecture. It was an immersive learning experience combining storytelling, dramatisation, intellectual participation and reflection.
An Analogy with Pavlov’s Principle
In Pavlov’s Classical Conditioning experiment, a sound repeatedly associated with food eventually produced a response on its own. In our student life, Prof. K. Seshaiah’s classes created a similarly positive association. His name, his period on the timetable or the approaching time of his lecture naturally generated attention, curiosity and enthusiasm among us.
This does not mean that his teaching was Pavlovian conditioning in the strict scientific sense. It is an analogy showing how repeated positive learning experiences can create anticipation and readiness to learn. We were not addicted to a teaching style; we were captivated by the joy of learning that it produced.
A Lesson for Today’s Teachers
- Transform theory into a story and a meaningful situation.
- Make students mentally participate in the lesson.
- Connect concepts with real-life examples.
- Sustain attention through questions, voice and expression.
- Encourage students to continue reflecting after the class ends.
Technology, smart boards and digital content can support education, but they cannot replace a teacher who kindles curiosity. The true magic of teaching does not lie in the equipment. It lies in mastery of the subject, concern for students and the ability to make knowledge come alive.
My View
Prof. K. Seshaiah did more than teach us management theories; he showed us how an exceptional teacher could transform theory into experience. Experiential learning does not always require a laboratory, field visit or simulation. In the hands of an extraordinary teacher, an ordinary classroom can become a learning experience remembered for a lifetime.
Students may forget some definitions, but they rarely forget the teacher who made knowledge come alive before them.
