సంప్రదాయ గమనిక: Arthur W. Ryder అనువాదంలోని “The Bharunda Birds” కథను అనుసరించాం.
Systems thinking
Panchatantra for Human Development — Day 36
Two heads, one body
Beside a quiet lake lived a strange Bharunda bird with two heads and necks but one body and stomach. One day the first head found delicious nectar. The second asked for a share, explaining that nourishment reached one stomach but taste belonged to each tongue.
The first refused: “Whether you eat or I eat, it reaches the same belly.” The body received nourishment, but the second head carried humiliation.
Later the second head found a poisonous fruit. The first pleaded, “Do not eat it; we will both die.” The second replied that if the nectar had belonged to one head, this fruit belonged to the other. Anger erased the fact of their shared body. The poison did not stop at one neck; the whole bird perished.
Tradition note: This follows Arthur W. Ryder’s “The Bharunda Birds.” Details vary across retellings, but the two heads, one stomach and shared destruction remain central.
Modern relevance
The first failure is unfair sharing; the second is converting humiliation into revenge. Organisations repeat this pattern when one department hoards information and another blocks execution. A family can repeat it when retaliation destroys shared savings. Each side may prove a point while the common system loses.
Systems thinking
If we draw the boundary too narrowly, “I won” can mean the system failed. Identify the shared budget, brand, child, environment or future. In conflict, ask not only who is right, but whether the chosen action keeps the shared system alive.
🌱 Life Lesson
When parts of one body act as enemies, there is no winner. Fair sharing is necessary, but retaliation must not poison the common future. Name the hurt, set a boundary and seek repair without choosing an action that sinks everyone.
Reflective question
What “one body” do you share with someone you currently treat as a rival—a family, institution, community or planet?
