Panchatantra for Human Development — Day 35

The four Brahmins and the lion

Four friends set out to earn a living through knowledge. Three were highly learned; the fourth had little book learning but strong practical judgement. In a forest they found scattered animal bones.

The first scholar assembled the skeleton. The second supplied flesh, skin and blood. The practical friend recognised a lion. When the third scholar proposed restoring life, he warned that a living lion would attack them. Pride dismissed his warning, so he asked them to wait while he climbed a tree.

The scholar revived the lion. Acting according to its nature, it killed the three men who had created it. The friend in the tree survived.

Story note: This is the well-known “Lion-Makers” story from Book Five of the Panchatantra. Translations vary in small details, while the conflict between scholarship and judgement remains central.

Modern relevance

A team may be able to build a powerful technology, yet release it without a safety review. A financial model may promise returns while ignoring liquidity risk. Technical capability answers “Can we?”; judgement must still ask “Should we, under these conditions?”

The value of dissent

The fourth friend was not the credentialed majority. His observation was more valuable than status. Healthy teams treat dissent as a possible risk signal, not an insult. When he could not stop the others, he protected himself—also a lesson in boundaries.

🌱 Life Lesson

Knowledge gives power; wisdom governs its use. When pride silences warning, an achievement can become its creator’s danger.
