English
The story
A poor Brahmin saw a serpent living in an anthill beside his field and treated it as the guardian of the land. He left a bowl of milk. The next morning, a gold coin lay in the bowl. A quiet exchange followed: milk each day, one coin in return.
When the Brahmin travelled, his son took the milk. Seeing the coin, he imagined a hoard beneath the anthill and tried to kill the serpent to seize everything at once. The attempt failed; the serpent bit him and he died. The grieving father later tried to restore the old relationship.
The serpent refused. The father would remember his son; the serpent would remember the blow. Trust had become impossible. One greedy act destroyed both the relationship and its future value.
Modern relevance
The pattern appears when a business squeezes a reliable partner for one quarter’s gain, when a manager exploits a dependable employee, or when a community exhausts a resource instead of harvesting it sustainably. Compounding needs restraint. Trust is capital built slowly and lost abruptly.
🌱 Life Lesson
Respect a durable, reciprocal benefit; do not destroy its source for an imagined jackpot. Greed asks, “How much more is hidden?” Wisdom asks, “What keeps this relationship alive?”
