When direct force is impossible, understanding the system is itself a form of power.

English
The story: A strong enemy and a smarter path
A pair of crows lived in a large tree. In a hollow of the same tree lived a venomous black snake. Whenever the crows laid eggs and raised young ones, the snake emerged and devoured them. This was no longer a single accident; it had become a recurring, systemic threat.
Grieving over the loss of her children, the crow-hen wanted to leave the tree. Her companion felt that abandoning their long-established home should not be the only answer. Yet he clearly recognised that they did not have the strength to defeat the snake directly. Accepting that limitation was his first intelligent decision.
Instead of attacking in anger, he consulted a knowledgeable friend, the jackal. After studying the problem, the jackal suggested a strategy: take a valuable ornament used by the royal household and drop it visibly into the snake’s hole. The palace attendants would follow the ornament, reach the hollow, and remove the snake while recovering their property.
The crow-hen took a gold chain left beside a pond by women of the royal household. With the attendants watching and pursuing her, she dropped it into the black snake’s hole. They examined the hollow, found and killed the snake, recovered the chain, and departed. The crow pair could then live safely in their nest.
The crows never became stronger than the snake. They did not manufacture power they lacked; they connected existing powers, interests, and predictable responses in the right sequence. That is the strategic intelligence at the centre of the story.
Intelligence is more than trickery
Solving a problem intelligently is not merely about deceiving an opponent. It means defining the real problem, accepting constraints, seeking informed help, understanding available systems, and choosing a path that produces results with less risk. Honest recognition of weakness is often what reveals the right leverage.
- Problem: not the snake’s presence alone, but the repeated loss of the young.
- Constraint: the crows could not defeat the snake in direct combat.
- Resource: advice from an experienced jackal.
- Leverage: palace attendants would certainly pursue a valuable ornament.
- Outcome: the central threat was removed without direct combat.
A five-step map for modern problems
- Name the root, not the symptom: Is recurring delay caused by unclear ownership, a skill gap, or missing resources?
- Identify what you cannot do directly: Which constraint—authority, time, knowledge, or money—is decisive?
- Map available resources: Whose expertise, which rule, tool, or process can help?
- Run a small, reversible test: Check whether the approach works before committing fully.
- Review consequences: Did the problem shrink, and did the solution create injustice or a new danger for someone else?
The jackal and the war-drum provides the first step: verify reality before acting. The weaver who posed as Vishnu adds another warning: do not let grief, anger, love, or hope make the decision for you. Good strategy begins after facts are clear and emotion has settled.
The ethical boundary of strategy
The stolen gold chain is a narrative device in the fable. It should not be read as approval of theft or of using innocent people merely as instruments. Modern problem-solving should be lawful, proportionate, and designed to minimise harm. A truly intelligent solution considers not only whether it succeeds, but also who might be hurt along the way.
Today’s practice
Choose one problem that keeps returning. Write four headings: root problem—my constraint—helpful resource—lowest-risk next step. Instead of confronting it with force, consult one informed person or begin the appropriate process today.
My reflection
We do not have to solve every problem through our own strength. Asking for help is not defeat; connecting the right source of strength at the right moment is leadership. Intelligence becomes truly valuable when it achieves the goal while preventing unnecessary harm.
What leverage could serve you better than force in a problem you face today?
