The Story of Ashadhabhuti
In a monastery in a secluded place lived an ascetic named Devasarma. Over time, offerings and fine garments given by devotees brought him a modest store of money. Trusting no one with it, he tied the treasure in a bundle and kept it under his arm day and night.
A thief named Ashadhabhuti noticed the bundle. The monastery wall was too strong to break through, and secret entry through the door seemed impossible. He therefore decided not to steal the money first, but to steal Devasarma’s trust.
One day he approached with great humility. He spoke eloquently about the impermanence of life, the emptiness of pleasure and his desire to follow a spiritual path. Impressed by such detachment in a young man, Devasarma accepted him as a disciple, though he instructed him not to enter the monk’s room at night.
Ashadhabhuti did not hurry. Each day he served the teacher, massaged his hands and feet, collected leaves and flowers for worship, and appeared devoted to every assigned duty. Devasarma still kept the treasure close, but the thief needed only one unguarded moment.
After some time, the son of another disciple invited Devasarma to a sacred-thread ceremony in a nearby village. Devasarma set out with Ashadhabhuti. At a river on the way, he had to step aside for a while. He wrapped the treasure inside his worn robe and asked the disciple to guard it carefully.
The trust patiently constructed over many days now became a key. As soon as Devasarma was out of sight, Ashadhabhuti seized the bundle and disappeared. His spiritual words, humble appearance and eager service had not expressed his character; they had been parts of a role designed in advance.
💭 What does the story teach us?
The mind forms quick impressions from appearance, speech, clothing and status. Such signals may provide clues, but they are not proof of integrity. Judging someone negatively by appearance is unfair; trusting someone completely for the same reason is unwise.
Ashadhabhuti told Devasarma exactly what he wanted to hear. His humility was not a settled virtue but an instrument. Excessive praise, instant agreement with all our values or unusually eager service can sometimes be a performance designed to gain access.
The story does not say, “Trust no one.” Families, friendships and institutions cannot function without trust. Wise trust, however, is not blind. It grows through time, observation, clear boundaries and safeguards proportionate to what is valuable. Kindness and caution are not opposites.
🔐 Five tests for building trust wisely
- Words and actions: Do they remain consistent over time?
- The test of time: Do not mistake a few days of good behaviour for enduring character.
- Verification: Independently confirm important claims about identity, experience and background.
- Progressive access: Grant access to money, documents, passwords or responsibility only as demonstrated reliability grows.
- Safeguards beyond personality: Even in a good relationship, use records, second checks and clear procedures for valuable assets.
In everyday life
A polished online profile, impressive title, elegant presentation, spiritual language or an offer made “only for you” cannot establish reliability by itself. Before sharing an OTP, password, bank detail, personal document or critical responsibility, verify the person or organisation through an official channel.
🌱 Today’s life lesson
A good appearance may invite trust; it cannot prove it. Measure character by actions sustained over time, not by words alone.
Today’s practice: Review one person or app that has access to your money, information or responsibilities. Check identity, purpose and access limits, then remove any permission that is no longer necessary.
A question for you: When did you last allow consistent behaviour—not charming words—to guide your judgment?
