The Story of Dantila and Gorambha
In a prosperous city lived Dantila, a wealthy merchant who managed both civic and royal affairs with unusual skill. He earned the confidence of the king and the goodwill of the people. When he celebrated his daughter’s wedding, he invited the townspeople as well as members of the royal household and treated them generously.
Gorambha, a sweeper in the palace, attended the celebration and sat in a place reserved for someone else. Instead of correcting him calmly, Dantila humiliated him before the gathering and drove him away. The mistake may have been small, but the public humiliation left a deep wound.
A few days later, Gorambha was cleaning the king’s bedchamber at dawn. While the king was half awake, he deliberately muttered that Dantila had crossed a boundary with the queen. When the startled king questioned him, Gorambha claimed that sleeplessness had made him speak without knowing what he said.
Because Dantila had easy access to the palace, suspicion took hold of the king. Without verifying the accusation, he barred Dantila from court. Confused by the sudden loss of favour, Dantila later heard Gorambha speaking at the palace gate and understood that the crisis had grown from the humiliation at the wedding.
Dantila did not answer with greater force. He invited Gorambha home, honoured him with garments and acknowledged that his conduct had injured the man’s dignity. He explained the original breach of protocol without trying to justify the public humiliation. Gorambha’s resentment eased.
The next morning, Gorambha again muttered that the king was doing something absurd—something the king knew he had never done. The king then realised that the earlier claim about Dantila could be equally baseless. He corrected his hasty judgment and restored Dantila to his former position.
💭 What does the story teach us?
A person doing a “small job” is not a small person. Roles, salaries and authority may differ, but human dignity does not. Families, institutions and societies depend every day on work that often remains unnoticed.
Public humiliation attacks the person instead of correcting the behaviour. A boundary may need to be enforced, but dignity should not be taken away. Dantila’s central mistake was not that he upheld a rule; it was the degrading manner in which he did so.
The story does not justify Gorambha’s lie. It warns that wounded dignity can turn into destructive retaliation. The king also fails a leadership test: he treats an overheard claim as evidence and passes judgment without inquiry. Respect, dialogue and verification are all essential to responsible leadership.
🤝 Four steps for correcting with respect
- Address the behaviour, not the person: Describe the specific action instead of labelling someone as wrong or inferior.
- Speak privately when possible: Praise in public; correct without creating an audience.
- Explain the reason for the boundary: Cooperation grows when people understand why a rule matters.
- Listen and repair: Good leadership is not appearing faultless; it is being willing to correct one’s own mistake.
In everyday life
A security guard, housekeeping worker, office attendant, junior employee, driver or new student may hold a less visible role. Yet one piece of information, one act of help or one overlooked detail can change a major outcome. Treat people with ordinary, sincere courtesy: use their name, hear them fully and recognise a specific contribution.
🌱 Today’s life lesson
A role may be small; a human being is not. Correct the mistake without wounding the person’s dignity.
Today’s practice: Greet by name one person whose contribution is usually overlooked and thank them for something specific. If you need to correct someone, do it privately and respectfully.
A question for you: Has a true message ever damaged a relationship because of the way it was delivered?
