The Jackal and the War Drum

After a king’s army left a battlefield near the edge of a forest, a large war drum remained behind. Some time later, a hungry jackal wandered into the area in search of food.

Suddenly, a deep “boom… boom…” echoed through the place. The jackal was terrified. Without seeing what made the sound, it imagined a creature of enormous size and strength. Its mind gave shape, scale and power to an unseen danger.

Yet the jackal did not flee at once. It stopped at a safe distance and watched. Whenever the wind blew, tall grass and branches struck the hide of the drum; when they stopped, the sound stopped too. The jackal approached carefully and tapped the drum. The same boom returned. The “monster” behind its fear was only an empty drum.

But the story does not end there. The jackal now assumed that anything making such a large sound must contain a great deal of meat. It gnawed through the hide and found only wood, skin and empty space. Its first assumption enlarged the danger; its second enlarged the reward. Neither was evidence—both were reactions to noise.

💭 What does the story teach us?

When information is missing, the mind fills the gap with imagination. It often sketches the worst possible outcome first. An unfamiliar sound, an unclear message or a half-read headline can therefore grow much larger in our thoughts than it is in reality.

Fear itself is not a mistake; it is a natural signal that helps us stay cautious. The danger begins when fear becomes the judge. Courage is not ignoring risk. It is observing from a safe distance, finding the source and making a decision proportionate to the evidence.

The tale offers another subtle warning: loud noise is not proof of a great threat, and it is not proof of a great opportunity either. Publicity, rumours and spectacle can exaggerate both fear and hope.

🔎 Five steps from fear to inquiry

  1. Pause: Take two slow breaths before reacting.
  2. Separate: Ask, “What do I know, and what am I assuming?”
  3. Locate the source: Where did the sound, message or claim begin?
  4. Verify safely: Check a reliable source; when needed, ask a parent, teacher or qualified expert.
  5. Act proportionately: Let the strength of the evidence determine the size of your response.

In everyday life

It may be a message saying an exam was postponed, an “urgent” forward, an unexpected office email or a new sound from a machine. Before panicking, sharing or acting, check the official information. Verification is not a delay; it is the intelligence that prevents a wrong decision.

🌱 Today’s life lesson

A loud sound does not always mean a large danger. Learn the truth before allowing fear to deliver the verdict.

Today’s practice: Choose one issue that is making you anxious. Draw two columns on paper: “Confirmed facts” and “My assumptions.” Then use one reliable source to test at least one assumption.

A question for you: What recent fear became smaller after you learned the facts?
