The dream grew faster than the plan—and one careless movement threatened the only real asset.

సంప్రదాయ గమనిక: ఈ కథకు “The Brahman's Dream”, “The Pot of Flour” వంటి పేర్లతో రూపాంతరాలు ఉన్నాయి.

  1. Real asset

The story

A poor Brahmin received a small quantity of flour as alms. He stored it in a clay pot and hung the pot above his bed. Looking at it one night, he began to calculate his future.

If a famine came, he would sell the flour at a high price and buy two goats. The goats would multiply; he would trade them for cattle, acquire fields and build a large house. In his imagination he married and had a son. When the imagined child disobeyed him, he decided he would show discipline with a kick.

His real foot swung upward. It struck the real pot. The pot shattered and the flour scattered across the floor. The goats, cattle, fields and house disappeared because none had existed. He also lost the one asset he truly possessed.

Traditional note: Versions appear under titles such as “The Brahman's Dream” and “The Pot of Flour.” Details vary, but the core episode remains the same.

Modern relevance

Dreaming is not the mistake. The mistake is treating a chain of untested assumptions as completed success. The Brahmin had not sold the flour, checked the market or bought a goat, yet he felt emotional ownership of the final fortune.

  • A startup spends against a future valuation before product-market fit.
  • A household takes a large EMI based on an expected raise.
  • A student imagines the rank but does not build a study system.
  • An investor treats one early gain as permanent skill and adds leverage.

🌱 Life Lesson

A dream should provide direction; calculation should map the path; action alone creates progress. Protect the real asset, identify the next measurable step, write down assumptions, seek feedback and connect every hopeful vision to practical work.

Reflective question: What is the “pot of grain” you must protect today—time, savings, health, skill or trust?
