- Family dispute
English version — Bhishma speaks
When Parashurama reached our frontier, I went to honour him as my former teacher. He accepted my worship and commanded me to take responsibility for Amba, whose marriage prospects had collapsed after my abduction and Salva’s rejection.
I refused. Amba had declared that her heart belonged to Salva, and I had released her. I would not break my vow of celibacy or force her upon my brother. My reverence for my teacher remained, but neither of us created a workable remedy for Amba.
The exchange hardened into a challenge. Ganga pleaded with both sides, but positions had become matters of honour. We proceeded toward Kurukshetra. This episode stops before the combat that follows.
🌱 Human Development Perspective
Both sides may believe they defend duty. Conflict becomes destructive when positions turn into moral absolutes and the harmed person disappears from the centre of the discussion. Respectful language alone cannot compensate for the absence of a remedy.
🌱 Life Lesson
A vow can create consistency, but it must be examined when it blocks justice. Good conciliation asks not merely who is right, but what repair is still possible.
