When My Charioteer Fell — Bhishma Speaks

I am Bhishma. At sunrise, Parashurama renewed the battle and poured arrows upon me. My beloved charioteer was struck, fell from his place and died. Grief loosened my command of the horses, the chariot and my own attention.

Parashurama’s next shaft struck my chest and I fell. Eight radiant Brahmanas surrounded and held me so that I did not touch the ground. They reassured me. My mother Ganga protected my horses and chariot. After recovering, I took the reins myself and returned.

My arrow then felled Parashurama, and the combat stopped at sunset. Yet the duel resumed day after day and continued for twenty-three days.

🌱 Human Development Perspective

Competence can collapse when a critical teammate is lost. Resilience is not denial: it is recognising shock, accepting support, restoring capacity and then acting. Strong systems also cross-train roles so one loss does not destroy the whole mission.

🌱 Life Lesson

Your strength includes the people and systems that hold you when you fall. Accepting help and taking the reins again is maturity. But after recovery, examine whether a vow-driven conflict is solving the problem or merely extending it.
