Mahabharata for Human Development — Day 15
I am Amba: refuge and a path to Parashurama
After hearing my story, the ascetics offered different paths. Some advised returning to my father; others suggested approaching Shalva again. I refused both. I feared humiliation among my relatives, and Shalva had already rejected me.
I said that Bhishma’s abduction had changed the course of my life and lay at the root of my suffering. I would remain and undertake austerity. Then the royal sage Hotravahana arrived. He was my maternal grandfather.
He drew me close and listened before judging. He told me I need not return to my father’s house and could remain under his protection. He then advised me to approach his friend Parashurama, son of Jamadagni, who might act after hearing my case.
Parashurama’s disciple Akritavrana reached the hermitage. My grandfather narrated my situation. Akritavrana asked whether I wanted Shalva persuaded or Bhishma confronted, and said Parashurama would arrive the next morning. It was not yet a remedy, but at last there was a path toward someone with the power to hear and act.
Text note: This episode stops at Udyoga Parva Section CLXXVIII. Parashurama’s meeting with Amba and later events are not advanced here.
🌱 Human Development Perspective
Hotravahana’s first gift was not a solution but safe belonging. Telling a distressed person to “go back” is easy; listening to why that route feels unsafe is harder. He then used a trusted relationship to open access to an appropriate decision-maker.
Present-day relevance
A workplace grievance needs a neutral escalation route, not a forced return to the same unsafe team. In family crises, restore safety and agency before giving advice. A mentor should use influence to create access, not control the outcome.
🌱 Life Lesson
Offer refuge first, choices next, and decision-making power throughout. A wise elder does not live our life for us; the elder opens a door through which our voice can be heard.
