India's September 2026 goods trade: exports strengthened, but imports rose faster than in August.

  • September merchandise exports: $44.40 billion; September 2025: $36.08 billion.
  • September merchandise imports: $74.61 billion; September 2025: $69.08 billion.
  • April–September 2026-27 goods exports $259.89 billion; imports $437.53 billion; cumulative goods deficit $177.64 billion.
  • Merchandise + services total exports September estimate $80.75 billion; total imports $94.05 billion.
  • Services figures for September are estimates because the latest RBI services data available to the release was for August.

PIB release ప్రకారం petroleum-product exports year-on-year 31.90%, organic and inorganic chemicals 24.21%, engineering goods 20.91%, cotton yarn/fabrics/handloom products 20.76% పెరిగాయి.

Import bill

  • October–Decemberలో export growth broad-basedగానే ఉందా?
  • New trade agreements వల్ల firmsకు నిజమైన orders, lower barriers కనిపిస్తున్నాయా?

English

India exported $44.40 billion of merchandise in September 2026 and imported $74.61 billion, leaving a goods deficit of $30.21 billion. The gap widened from $26.86 billion in August. Yet exports also rose strongly from $36.08 billion a year earlier, while imports increased from $69.08 billion. Both facts matter: export momentum improved, but the latest monthly import bill rose faster.

What is verified?

For April–September 2026-27, merchandise exports were $259.89 billion, imports $437.53 billion and the cumulative goods deficit $177.64 billion. Combined goods-and-services exports for September were estimated at $80.75 billion and imports at $94.05 billion. The official release explicitly notes that September services figures are estimates based on the latest available RBI data.

Where did exports strengthen?

Petroleum-product exports rose 31.90% year on year, organic and inorganic chemicals 24.21%, engineering goods 20.91%, and cotton yarn, fabrics and handloom products 20.76%. Non-petroleum and non-gems-and-jewellery exports reached $34.81 billion. That breadth is encouraging, though its durability depends on global demand, freight costs, exchange rates and market access.

Why the import composition matters

A high import bill is not automatically negative. Machinery, energy and components can support future production. But persistent dependence on volatile commodities or weak domestic capability can expose the economy to price and currency shocks. Non-petroleum, non-gems-and-jewellery imports rose to $51.64 billion from $42.33 billion a year earlier. Detailed commodity data is needed before assigning that increase to one cause.

My assessment:

The $30.21 billion figure should be neither a panic headline nor a standalone export victory. The sensible goal is not indiscriminate import suppression. It is to expand high-value exports, build competitive domestic capability, improve energy efficiency and logistics, and generate more productive output from each imported dollar.
