Retail 4.82%… Wholesale 9.92%:

Wholesale food inflation 7.05%, manufactured products 8.37%, fuel and power 22.93%గా నమోదయ్యాయి. Petroleum and natural gas
CPI–WPI gap
కొంత భారాన్ని firms marginsలో absorb చేయవచ్చు; కొంత ధరలుగా ఆలస్యంగా pass through కావచ్చు; demand బలహీనంగా ఉంటే pass-through పరిమితం కావచ్చు.
Fuel and power WPI 22.93% కావడం transport, packaging, chemicals, fertilisers, manufacturing, logistics వంటి రంగాల్లో input-cost riskను పెంచుతుంది.
- September food prices—onion, pulses, rice, edible oils, sugar.
- Wholesale fuel costs retail transport, goods pricesకు ఎంత pass through అవుతాయి?
Future rate hike, firms’ pass-through, household impactపై వ్యాఖ్యలు economic interpretation; అవి ఖచ్చితమైన forecasts కావు.

What do the latest numbers show?
Verified information: Data released on 14 September showed India’s retail inflation—the Consumer Price Index or CPI—rising to 4.82% in August 2026 from 4.45% in July. It was marginally above the Reuters poll estimate of 4.80% and the highest reading since the new CPI series began in January.
Consumer food inflation increased from 5.52% to 5.95%, while transport inflation rose from 4.43% to 4.60%. Price pressure also showed signs of spreading beyond food and fuel into clothing, household goods, education and food-serving services.
The Wholesale Price Index, released the same day, rose 9.92% in August versus 9.78% in July. Wholesale food inflation was 7.05%, manufactured-products inflation 8.37%, and fuel-and-power inflation 22.93%. Reuters, citing official WPI data, reported a 34.41% rise in petroleum and natural-gas prices.
How should we read the CPI–WPI gap?
CPI measures the retail prices of goods and services purchased by households. WPI mainly reflects goods prices at the wholesale or producer level; services do not enter it in the same way. The two indices also differ in weights, taxes, distribution costs, margins and base effects.
It would therefore be wrong to subtract 4.82% CPI from 9.92% WPI and claim that 5.10 percentage points of inflation is “waiting” to reach consumers. Wholesale costs do not pass through immediately or fully. Firms may absorb some in margins, pass some on later, or restrain increases when demand is weak.
What it means for households
Headline CPI remains inside the 6% upper tolerance limit, but food inflation at 5.95% matters for household budgets. Lower-income families spend a larger share of income on food, transport and essentials, so their experienced inflation can be higher than the average index suggests.
Higher prices for items such as onion, garlic, ginger and sugar affected the food basket. Our El Niño and Andhra Pradesh agriculture analysis explains the weather channel, while the ₹60/kg sugar-price article examines a specific supply-policy case.
What it means for businesses
Fuel-and-power WPI at 22.93% increases input-cost risk across transport, packaging, chemicals, fertilisers, manufacturing and logistics. Firms with pricing power can raise prices; highly competitive MSMEs may instead face compressed margins or lost orders.
India’s dependence on imported energy means a global crude shock can affect WPI, the rupee and the trade deficit together. Our trade-deficit analysis explains why the energy import bill matters.
Will the RBI raise rates immediately?
Fact: CPI has remained above the RBI’s 4% medium-term target for three consecutive months, though it is still within the 2%–6% tolerance band. The RBI kept the repo rate unchanged at 5.25% at its last policy meeting.
Interpretation: An October rate increase is not certain. The Monetary Policy Committee will assess whether the food shock is temporary, whether core inflation is broadening, how long crude prices remain elevated, and what growth and credit demand are signalling. Economists may see a higher probability of tightening, but that is not an official decision.
Four signals to watch next
- September prices for onion, pulses, rice, edible oils and sugar.
- How far wholesale fuel costs pass into retail transport and goods prices.
- Whether core inflation excluding food and fuel broadens further.
- How the RBI changes its forecast, liquidity stance and rate guidance in October.
My assessment:
There is no need to panic over 4.82% CPI, but it would also be unwise to dismiss 9.92% WPI. The real warning is not a single number; it is the risk that price pressure spreads from food and fuel into more categories. The RBI should measure persistence carefully and respond credibly. Interest rates alone cannot cure a supply shock—food logistics, imports, buffers and energy diversification also belong in the policy response.
Fact vs interpretation: CPI, WPI, category-inflation and repo-rate figures are verified from official data and Reuters. Comments on future rate action, corporate pass-through and household effects are economic interpretation, not certain forecasts.
