Two videos, two international voices—and one positive signal about the Indian economy.

The first video carries an official assessment from the International Monetary Fund. The second presents the views of prominent American economist Professor Jeffrey Sachs.

Neither is a representative of the Government of India. Yet both recognise the Indian economy’s present momentum and its long-term potential.

What Did the IMF Say?

At the IMF press briefing held on 10 September 2026, Julie Kozack, Director of the IMF Communications Department, made important observations about the Indian economy.

India’s real GDP grew by 7.8% during April–June 2026—the second quarter of the calendar year.

This growth was:

  • Above the expectations of IMF staff
  • Above the consensus among other observers
  • Driven by stronger activity in the services sector
  • Supported by a better-than-expected export performance

Kozack said that the outcome underscored the resilience of the Indian economy despite the energy-price shock.

The IMF also reiterated that India remains a “key growth engine for the world.”

The IMF also responded to questions about India’s GDP statistics. It welcomed the incorporation of a new Index of Industrial Production and a new Producer Price Index series, noting that these measures should improve GDP estimates. At the same time, it encouraged India to continue strengthening its statistical framework and data quality.

In other words, the IMF offered praise while also recommending further improvement. That is what a balanced assessment looks like.

What Did Jeffrey Sachs Say?

In a recent India Today interview with Rajdeep Sardesai, Professor Jeffrey Sachs of Columbia University expressed strong expectations about India’s economic future.

According to Sachs:

  1. India is currently growing faster than all other large countries.
  2. Foreign investment from China, technological cooperation and joint ventures could accelerate India’s growth further.
  3. Within less than a quarter-century, India and China could become the world’s two largest economies, with the United States in third place.
  4. At some point during this century, India could emerge as the world’s largest economy.

These are Jeffrey Sachs’s personal long-term forecasts, not outcomes that are already assured. His argument rests substantially on stronger India–China cooperation, technology transfer, investment and the development of a multipolar world order.

They are therefore not guarantees. They are, however, significant indications of the immense potential that a globally recognised economist sees in India.

What Do These Statements Actually Prove?

These favourable assessments do not mean that every economic problem in India has been solved.

Questions must still be asked about the quality of employment, per-capita income, income inequality, agricultural distress, expansion of manufacturing and transparency of economic statistics.

At the same time, sweeping political claims such as—

“The Indian economy has been completely destroyed.”

“Nothing in the country is working.”

“India’s entire growth story is fabricated.”

—do not fit the available evidence either.

Questioning a statistic is part of democracy. Rejecting every positive indicator merely because it does not suit one’s political position is not analysis.

Three Choices for the “Modi Failed” Camp!

  1. Read the IMF’s official statement.
  2. Disagree with Jeffrey Sachs through evidence and reasoned argument.
  3. Mute both videos and restart the old script of lamentation and denunciation! 😅

My View

India’s growth is not the personal creation of any one leader or government. It reflects the combined contribution of public policy, state governments, entrepreneurs, workers, employees, farmers, consumers, young people and the Indian diaspora.

A government that claims credit for success must also accept responsibility for shortcomings. Likewise, critics of the government should not substitute suspicion for evidence or turn a political slogan into economic analysis.

The IMF’s praise is not a blank cheque for the government. Jeffrey Sachs’s forecast is not a guarantee about the future. Yet the potential that the world sees in India cannot be dismissed merely because of political intolerance.

India’s story is neither one of blind celebration nor one of permanent despair.

  • Let us examine the data.
  • Let us ask questions.
  • Let us recognise progress.
  • Let us correct the shortcomings.

That is genuine patriotism. That is responsible democratic debate.
