అధికారిక పదం up to 70%.
- Same medicine comparison: molecule, strength, dosage form, pack size
- Enforcement: State drug controllers, hospitals, NPPA complaints
Health economics
NPPA medicine-wise old MRP, revised MRP, market availability
What exactly has India capped?
On 17 October 2026, the National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority announced Trade Margin Rationalisation for 137 identified non-scheduled anti-cancer drugs. Revised prices are to take effect from 9 November. The trade margin is capped at 30%, and the government says MRPs may fall by up to 70%, depending on the existing price structure.
This is not a uniform ceiling price for every cancer medicine. Scheduled essential medicines are already subject to ceiling-price regulation. The new measure targets margins added within the supply chain for selected medicines outside that scheduled list.
Why “up to 70%” needs care
The reduction will not be identical across 137 medicines. A product carrying a large distributor, retailer or hospital mark-up may see a substantial correction. A product whose existing margin is already moderate may see a smaller change. “Up to” describes a possible maximum, not a guaranteed saving on every brand.
The implementation test
The 2019 pilot covered 42 medicines and led to lower MRPs across hundreds of brands. The expanded policy can strengthen affordability, but success should be measured through medicine-wise revised MRPs, actual patient bills, uninterrupted availability and enforcement across hospital and retail channels.
Trade-margin control also addresses only one component of cancer expenditure. Diagnostics, procedures, hospital charges, travel and income loss remain important. Price regulation should therefore be connected with insurance design, public procurement, generic competition and transparent treatment packages.
My assessment:
The policy is economically meaningful because it targets avoidable mark-ups without pretending that every part of a medicine’s price is the same. Its credibility will depend on transparent medicine-level data after 9 November. The most useful public measure is not the largest percentage announced, but the verified rupee saving that reaches patients without reducing supply.
