Poverty and Un-British Rule in India

1892లో Liberal Party candidateగా Finsbury Central నుంచి British House of Commonsకు ఎన్నికయ్యారు. ఆయన first Indian—and widely recognised as the first Asian—elected to the British Parliament.

Swaraj

“Grand Old Man of India”గా ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన ఆయనను ఒక గౌరవ బిరుదుతో మాత్రమే గుర్తుంచుకోవడం సరిపోదు.

English version

Early life and formation

Born in Bombay on 4 September 1825, Dadabhai Naoroji excelled at Elphinstone College and became the first Indian full professor there. He supported women’s education and used the Gujarati journal Rast Goftar to promote citizenship and social reform.

From business to public advocacy

Naoroji moved to London in 1855, worked in commerce and later founded his own firm. In 1867 he established the East India Association to present Indian concerns to British public opinion and policymakers.

The economic argument for freedom

His Drain Theory argued that salaries, pensions, interest, procurement and other transfers moved Indian income to Britain without equivalent reinvestment. His 1901 book Poverty and Un-British Rule in India transformed colonial exploitation from a moral accusation into a sustained economic case.

Parliament and Swaraj

In 1892 he was elected Liberal MP for Finsbury Central, becoming the first Indian elected to the House of Commons. He used the position to raise Indian financial and administrative questions. As Congress president in 1886, 1893 and 1906, he helped place Swaraj at the centre of national politics.

Hardship and response

He faced poor data, imperial prejudice and racist electoral opposition. His response was institutional: improve statistics, build associations, use the press, enter Parliament and mentor the next generation.

🌱 Human Development Perspective

Naoroji shows that leadership can begin with patient measurement. He converted public suffering into evidence and evidence into organised political action.

🌱 Life Lesson

Emotion may start a movement, but credible evidence gives it endurance. Numbers guided by values can become a moral force.
