Mahabharata for Human Development — Day 3

The Truth Ganga Revealed — Devavrata’s Journey

I am Ganga.

When Shantanu stopped me as I carried our eighth child toward the river, the condition under which we had married came to an end. I no longer needed to remain silent. The time had come to explain the reason behind the pain he had carried for years.

Our children were not ordinary infants. They were the Vasus, destined to be born as humans because of Sage Vasishtha’s curse. They had asked me to release them from earthly life as quickly as possible. That is why I returned the first seven to my waters soon after their birth. To anyone who did not know their past, my actions could appear unbearably cruel. To me, who knew the larger story, it was the fulfilment of a difficult responsibility.

The eighth Vasu, however, was destined to remain on earth much longer. Because Shantanu had questioned me, I took this child with me. He would later become known as Devavrata.

I knew that merely raising him as my son would not be enough. Great responsibilities awaited him. I therefore resolved that he should be trained in dharma, statecraft, learning and warfare. A fortunate birth may offer an opportunity, but disciplined education prepares a person to carry responsibility.

Taking him away caused Shantanu further pain. Yet I intended to return Devavrata one day as an educated, capable young man worthy of the responsibilities before him.

That day the events Shantanu had witnessed did not change, but their meaning changed when he learned their background. It was a reminder that what we see is not always the whole story.

🌱 Human Development Perspective

This episode highlights two powerful lessons: avoid judging with incomplete information, and natural ability needs training to mature into competence.

At work, a colleague’s decision may initially seem wrong until we understand the information available to that person. In families, behaviour that appears selfish may have a context we have not yet heard. A talented student still needs disciplined practice, teachers and experience. Organisations likewise do not create leaders merely by identifying talent; they develop leadership through mentoring, training and meaningful responsibility.

Devavrata’s journey reminds us: talent is an opportunity; training gives it direction.

🌱 Life Lesson

Do not decide the whole story from the part you can see. Ask, understand and seek context. At the same time, cultivate your own potential through disciplined learning, good mentors and purposeful practice.
